Πεντοζάλης του Στέλιου [Stelios’s Pentozalis]
Stelios Petrakis

Dedicated to the folk musicians of Chania Prefecture
Inspired by Kondylies which precede and sometimes follow new, old and familiar melodies and other times follow paths unexplored by classical Cretan music, I started composing a series of four-measure Pentozalis phrases in Efrén’s village (Mas de Flors, Spain). I tried to imitate old composers and maintain a logical order between the modulations, as well as coherence in the melody, while highlighting the arrangement for the three last steps of the dance to stress its power and intensity. The composition of this Pentozalis travels the same familiar and unexplored
musical pathways as Efrén’s Kondylies and ends where the traditional Pentozalis begins. SP
