Stelios Petrakis

To Deukalion and Dimitris of the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.
The name of this piece is taken from Book 11 of The Odyssey. Odysseus visits Hades, the land of the dead, in a dark gloomy atmosphere where the nostalgia of past life is overbearing. There, he meets again the people he holds dear, his mother and Achilles, who, feeling nostalgic, tells him in confidence that he would rather be alive
and serve the poorest man than king of the underworld. Odysseus, worried about being petrified by his own nostalgia, finally chooses to escape as soon as possible (wise decision…).
Inspired by the story of this ancient epic poem, this piece was composed for the listener as a mental journey through time and into the depth of his soul. This music seeks to stimulate his most secret and sensitive resources by guiding him through this mental journey. Intimidated, I performed it for the first time next to the resonant sanctuaries at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, and ever since, the same feelings arise whenever I play it on the lyre. SP
