Şîn û zer [Shin u zer] (Blue and Yellow)

The cats of Wan, in Turkish Kurdistan, have a distinguishing feature that makes them unique: they have a blue eye and a yellow one (Şîn û zer in Kurdish). In 2015, I was invited to give a seminar and a concert in Wan, where I enjoyed the wonderful Kurdish hospitality for a few days. I dedicate this piece to the people I met there and who felt
like old friends from the very first moment. With Wan cats as a symbol, I also dedicate it to all those who have a strange, unique and unsettling type of beauty.
I wrote the first section of this piece on March 6th, 2016, as I was trying out a new lute (made by Stelios by the way), five minutes before going on stage with the German band Faun. I composed the fast middle section during one of my usual “composition sessions” while gazing at the sun’s first rays through drowsy half-closed eyes, body and soul miles away. EL
