Κοντυλιές του Εφρέν [Efrén’s Kontylies]

What I enjoy the most when I play with Stelios and Bijan as a trio is the feeling of being a magician who has the power to compose melodies, that brilliant musicians like them will later interpret almost always in a more inspired way than I expected. Kontylies are a type of Cretan melody and dance that I wanted to create for my new hurdy gurdy by trying to imitate the phrasing and ornaments of the Cretan lyra that Stelios masters so well.
When we met for our rehearsals before recording, I was amazed by how Stelios’ performance would take the piece to a whole new level. That’s where he composed the following Pentozalis, a rapid dance that traditionally follows the Kontylies. EL
