One afternoon, when the sun was still casting long shadows on the earth, the Emperor discovered why his mulberry were losing their leaves. His beloved Leizu, young and clever with an astute and gentle charm, took a long walk and lay down under those majestic trees residing in her beautiful garden. Observing nothing she decided to create a little place for relaxation and meditation. An elegant pergola with soft cushions and a low table for tea was all that was necessary. She sat there that afternoon and those that followed, sipping tea and contemplating the sunset.
Soon after something extraordinary occurred. A strange unidentifiable organic ball appeared floating in her steaming teacup. Looking upwards to the umbrella of branches that shaded her, she saw, between the thousands of leaves woven like a spiders web, small yellow balls exactly the likes of which had fallen into her tea. Her curiosity led her to very delicately untangle the ball, which in time began to float in the liquid. A thread appeared, white. Pulling and pulling on the thread she was almost able to walk the around entire grove of her garden. So long was the thread that it became obvious that one could gather and weave with it… Later she learned that these yellow balls were being released by small worms who had previously been eating the mulberry leaves until they could eat no more. So proud was the Emperor at his revelation that he encouraged his beautiful Leizu to develop a way to make use of this gift given by the mulberries in his garden. Perhaps the gift had been offered by gods, who knows?
And so the story of the origin of silk production is written.
